    Introduction to Svaroopa® yoga

Most styles of yoga work within an exercise format which treats yoga as another form of physical exercise. These styles use yoga to stretch muscles and ligaments for flexibility, particularly in the hips and shoulders.

Svaroopa® Yoga works is completely different…using poses that  release tensions in the body to provide flexibility - beginning at the base of the spine where the deepest layers of tension in the muscles that wrap around the spine. Svaroopa Yoga releases core tensions in the spine beginning at the tailbone and progresively moving up the spine through the sacrum, the waist, and into the ribcage. The release of tensions through the spine in turn releases other muscles throughout the body, creating space inside the abdominal cavity making room for internal organs to function with ease, improving digestion, circulation and respiration as well as alleviating physical aches and pains, and contributing to greater vitality and mental clarity.

How to Choose a Yoga Teacher

To choose a yoga teacher wisely, check the certifcations. Some certifications require only a few days of study. Others require 200 to 500 hours of training. Individual schools certify their teachers as well as Yoga Alliance. You can ask to see your teacher’s certifications and verify them with the appropriate agencies.

Many certifications require continuing education, you can also check with schools and certifiying agencies to see if you teacher has kept up with his or her continuing education.

A teacher’s commitment to his or her practice and education is a commitment to the quality of your experience.

Your body loses the ability to sense the inner tensions when it is contracted with tight muscles. Svaroopa® yoga uses precise alignments and carefully selected poses.  Meticulous placement of props for full support, allows the body to open and release the deeply held tensions. One lesson of Svaroopa® yoga is “Support equals Release”.  Once you experience this opening, you realize something has opened all the way through your whole being.
